I'm Shelby, a certified birth doula in The Woodlands. I help women walk into birth informed, steady, and supported — whether that's a hospital room or your own bathtub.
What a doula actually does
A doula isn't a medical provider. I don't deliver babies, check dilation, or make decisions for you. I'm the person in the room whose only job is you — before, during, and after.
Someone there the whole time
Nurses change shifts. Doctors come and go. I stay from the time you want me there until you're settled with your baby.
Information, not opinions
When a decision comes up, I'll help you understand your options and ask the questions worth asking. What you choose is yours.
Alongside your team, not instead of it
I work with your provider, your nurses, and your partner. Especially your partner — most of them want to help and just aren't sure how yet.
I've had five babies. I wish I'd had a doula for every one.
My first birth came close to a C-section, and I didn't understand half of what was happening around me. My third was a home water birth. My fifth was pain-free — and one of the loneliest, because no one in that room was there only for me.
Five births, and it was a brand-new experience every single time. That's exactly why I do this now.

Prenatal planning
Visits before birth where we build your preferences, talk through what you want, and get your questions answered while there's still time to think. [TK: # of visits]

Postpartum follow-up

Backup coverage: if two births overlap, Hannah Rojas — an experienced local doula I work closely with — steps in. You're never left without support.

The things people ask first
What does a doula actually do?
I give continuous physical and emotional support through pregnancy, birth, and the weeks after — not medical care. Think comfort, information, and steady presence.
Will you take my husband's place?
The opposite. Part of my job is helping him know what to do, so he can be present with you instead of guessing.
Do I still need a doula if I'm planning an epidural?
Plenty of my support has nothing to do with pain management — decisions, positioning, and having someone with you the whole time. An epidural doesn't change that.
What if I end up needing a C-section?
I stay with you as far as your hospital allows, and I'm there on the other side for recovery and feeding support. Plans changing is exactly when support matters most.
What if you're at another birth when I go into labor?
Hannah Rojas, an experienced local doula I work closely with, covers as my backup. You'd have a chance to meet her beforehand. [TK: confirm meet-the-backup process]
